After an exceptional fiscal year in 2018, posting the best growth in the decade, tour operators are seeing a decline in package sales for the fiscal year from November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2019. This was due to a number of events, starting with the yellow vest movement. Over the last fiscal year, on a comparable basis, TO members of the Syndicat des entreprises du tour-operating (Seto) took 6,311,753 customers on trips (+7%), including 3,869,289 package customers (-2.9%). The «shame of flying» did not prevent traffic growth (4.2%) in 2019.

With two weeks to go until the end of 2019, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) unsurprisingly unveiled a tenth consecutive year of global growth for the sector, announcing a 4.2% increase in demand and a 3.5% increase in capacity.

However, the year was more difficult than expected for the world’s airlines, and the net profit of $28 billion announced last June for the industry as a whole was reduced to $25.9 billion.

While the year saw the «flygskam» (the «shame of flying») emerge and spread from Sweden, it’s hard to know whether it has impacted the growth of the industry, according to Alexander de Juniac, head of Iata. TourMag
