Environment, social networks, personalization: the new expectations of French travellers

61% of French travellers would like to know holiday destinations with a lower ecological impact. This is revealed in an Amadeus study on travellers’ expectations, entitled «Digital Footprints: Discovering online traveler needs in France». The survey was conducted by the Opinium survey institute from August 28 to September 3, 2019, among 1,005 French adults who went on vacation last year and used an online travel agency.

To prepare their holidays, the French start their research 4 months in advance, for a trip of less than 10 days, and 5 months in advance for longer stays. Travellers generally consult 3 websites for the purchase of flights only, and 4 for a «flights + hotel» package. Echo Touristique

Trends: Will the social networking landscape change in 2020?

The creator of Facebook did not limit himself to the famous wall, but later bought Instagram and Whatsapp. Indeed, after having been downloaded more than 663 million times in 2018, Tik Tok the Chinese social network even surpassed Instagram (only 444 million downloads that same year), while Facebook keeps the lead (711 million downloads). Thus, to avoid ending up with fewer users, because having had enough of seeing pictures of beaches and turquoise water, while they are in the middle of La Défense in Paris, it will probably be necessary to rethink its digital presence. Publish less, but better by «awakening their interest in the opportunities available to them in the real world.» TourMag

When the French Senate flies to the rescue of French companies

As part of the review of the 2020 Finance Bill, the Senate adopted several amendments in favour of the air transport sector. On the night of Monday to Tuesday, senators decided to help French companies and compensate, against the government’s advice, for the increase in the eco-contribution on airline tickets. While retaining the eco-contribution, the senators voted for an amendment that reduces civil aviation tax rates by €72 million, which has the effect of «offsetting the effect of the new tax». They have also created an over-damping mechanism for the purchase of cleaner aircraft to assist companies in their transition. Echo Touristique

Thomas Cook: after the bankruptcy, British pros want to review payment rules

The bankruptcy of Thomas Cook had consequences for many tourism professionals, particularly British tour operators. This is why The Association of ATOL Companies (AAC), which brings together many travel operators, calls on agencies and suppliers to agree «as a matter of urgency» on a new balance payment scheme to better protect its members.

According to Travel Weekly, Thomas Cook offered end customers a 5% discount in August and September in exchange for full payment of the amount for their trips, sometimes up to 9 months later. «A practice that cannot continue,» says Alan Bowen, AAFC legal counsel, at the risk of tour operators «seeking to increase their direct sales.
