Strikes: the government is concerned about the consequences for tourism

The consequences on tourism activity are beginning to worry the government. This was expressed by the Secretary of State for the Economy, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, in an interview on Cnews. «The most sensitive subject today is to reassure tourists that they can come, especially to Paris,» the Secretary of State said on Cnews. «The perception of these strikes from abroad is that France is both blocked and violent, and this is an image that is not new after the movements of the + yellow giants+. This is of course not good for tourism, for travel and for future bookings,» Jean-Pierre Mas, President of Les Entreprises du Voyage, commented to AFP. Echo Touristique

Destination trends: the tops and flops of winter 2019/20

It is an encouraging start to the winter for tour operators, despite the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook, the effects of which we are not yet fully aware: order intake for the season, which runs from 1 November 2019 to 30 April 2020, is up 4.7% in foreign areas, in traffic. Overall, medium-haul destinations are doing well, led by Morocco (+1% in traffic), Egypt (+18%, after +160% in the previous winter) and Tunisia (+34%). At the same time, not surprisingly, southern Europe is losing some feathers. Starting with the Canary Islands (-7%), which nevertheless remain on the second step of the podium, and continental Italy (-10%). Echo Touristique

How Split became the new favourite destination for French tourists in Croatia

The workshop organised at the Croatian Embassy in Paris on 28 November at the initiative of the Croatian tourist offices, the Split-Dalmatia region and the city of Split, was an opportunity to highlight the growing interest of the French people in this region with its many attractions. While Dubrovnik has long been Croatia’s leading destination, Split took first place with nearly 200,000 French visitors in 2019. A perfectly justified success in view of its many assets. With direct flights from Paris and the main provincial cities, Split is less than 2 hours from France. This easy access makes it a choice destination for a cultural, gastronomic, sporting or seaside city break. La Quotidienne

Paris Airports: kiosks to enable passengers to offset their carbon emissions

Passengers at Paris airports can now offset their carbon emissions by making a financial contribution to ecological and solidarity projects through «donation collection points» set up in Orly and Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle. This initiative is in parallel with other ADP actions to reduce CO2 emissions, such as the development of renewable energies with a geothermal power plant, a biomass power plant, thermofrigopumps, or photovoltaic solar panels, the energy performance of installations, the greening of vehicle fleets and the support of airlines through actions to help them reduce their ground emissions, says the manager. Weekendr, the start-up that puts artificial intelligence at the service of travel

Weekendr (www.weekendr.eu) intends to shake up the travel sector by giving it back its letters of nobility. The start-up takes a new approach to travel and wants to differentiate itself from existing travel booking sites. Weekendr listens to its users and finds the best weekends to go to Europe «which correspond exactly to everyone’s desires and constraints».

Launched last June, the site instantly composes unique and relevant packages with an ultra-personalized price-quality ratio, thanks to the mastery of artificial intelligence. Currently, Weekendr already offers more than 1.5 million stays in France and Europe. «Nowadays, travel is reduced to some kind of consumer good. That’s such a shame! Travelling is much more than that,» says Thomas Colas of the Franks, co-founder and CEO of Weekendr. Quotidien du Tourisme

Top of Travel: Olivier Velter replaces Yann Richard as Sales Director

There is movement within the Top of Travel executives. Olivier Velter, who left the tour operator at the end of 2017 to join the Heliades teams, is returning to his position as sales manager. He replaces Yann Richard, who remained in office for nearly two years. The former sales representative of Asia (1997-2009) and Club Med (2009-2018) is leaving the company «by mutual agreement», says Helmut Stuckelscwheiger. Olivier Velter will therefore manage Top of Travel’s commercial strategy, as he has already done for a year (2016-2017), thus ensuring a rapid start for the tour operator, which is focusing in particular on Egypt for 2020.
