BBC, 31 May 2019: Business lobby group CBI warns Tories over no-deal Brexit
The Confederation of British Industry has warned Conservative leadership candidates over a no-deal Brexit. Such a scenario would do «severe» damage to businesses, the body – which supported Remain – told all the MPs running to lead the party. Director general Carolyn Fairbairn told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that a no-deal Brexit should be an option «that is not even considered». Link

BBC,31 May 2019: Jeremy Hunt warns over ‘hard-line’ Brexit approach
Tory leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt has warned against taking a «very hard-line approach» in future Brexit talks. The foreign secretary told the BBC this would provoke a «very hard-line response» from Brussels and would not resolve the current crisis. He added that the UK had «made mistakes» in the negotiations with the EU so far. Link

CNN, 29 May 2019: Boris Johnson, favorite to be Britain’s next PM, to face court for alleged Brexit lies

The leading candidate to succeed Theresa May as British Prime Minister has been ordered to appear in court to face allegations he lied to the public during the 2016 Brexitreferendum campaign. A judge at Westminster Magistrate’s Court in London ruled that Boris Johnson, a former UK foreign secretary, must face a private summons on three counts of misconduct in public office. Johnson, who was the high-profile face of the Leave campaign, is accused of falsely claiming that Britain’s membership of the European Union cost £350 million ($442 million) a week. Link

Buying Business Travel, 31 May 2019: Extinction Rebellion plans Heathrow drone attacks

Climate activist group Extinction Rebellion has announced plans to cause a “pause” in flights at Heathrow airport in June and July through “nonviolent direct action” using drones. The group is demanding the UK government act on its declaration of a climate and environmental emergency by cancelling Heathrow expansion. Link

Stansted Airport is the worst in the UK when it comes to flight delays, according to a new investigation. Passengers were kept waiting for an average of 25 minutes at the airport last year. Link

Travel Bulletin, 31 May 2019: Free flights for travelling tots with Air Malta
Air Malta is treating families to a ‘Kids Fly Free’ offer on all flights to the Mediterranean island from Gatwick or Southend Airport this summer. This offer applies to bookings made before August 16, and is relevant for travellers heading to Malta between June 1 and September 30, subject to availability. Link

TTG, 31 May 2019: Tui vows to ‘ensure’ summer holidays amid 737 Max grounding
Tui says it will “ensure” all summer holidays go ahead, despite ongoing uncertainty over its fleet of grounded Boeing 737 Max aircraft. The Max was grounded worldwide in March following two fatal crashes. A probe has centred around one of the aircraft’s deep-seated control systems. Boeing is working on a software update. Link

Travel Mole, 31 May 2019: Thomas Cook tells unions it is ‘absolutely committed’ to high street presence
Union bosses have welcomed assurances from Thomas Cook that it is ‘absolutely committed’ to having a high street presence.In a statement issued today, TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes said Thomas Cook has assured the union that no major changes to the current operating model are expected over the short to medium term. Link

TTG, 30 May 2019: Flybe to increase flights from Cardiff
The regional airline will offer 120 flights per week next winter to eight destinations with Dublin services rising to 38 per week, Edinburgh going up to 36 weekly flights and Paris Charles de Gaulle up to 16 frequencies between 27 October and 28 March 2020. Flybe’s schedule from Cardiff also includes seasonal routes to the winter sports gateway airports of Chambery and Geneva, both starting on 14 December. Link

Travel Weekly, 30 May 2019: Outbound travel rises slightly in February
UK residents made 4.1 million visits overseas in February – 1% more than in February 2018 – according to the Office for National Statistics. The ONS figures also show that UK residents spent £2.4 billion on those visits, which was 7% down year-on-year. However, looking at slightly longer-term trends, the ONS figures show that for the period of December 2018 to February 2019, there were 12.4 million visits abroad by UK residents – down 2% year-on-year. Link

Travel Weekly, 28 April 2019: Digital growth ‘core part of strategy’

Thomas Cook declined to comment on reports it is to undergo a radical overhaul to become an “online holiday marketplace”, but a source close to the company reiterated that accelerating its digital presence remained core to its strategy. An insider said: “The absolute priority is to give ourselves greater financial flexibility to pay down debt and enable us to accelerate our own-brand strategy and have more of a digital focus. The strategic review of the airline is key to this.” Link

Travel Weekly, 28 May 2019: Banksy wades into Venice overtourism debate with new artwork
Street artist Banksy has unveiled his latest artwork in Venice depicting a large cruise ship, highlighting the issue of overtourism in the city. Some 20 million visitors visit the city each year. On its busiest days, around 120,000 people visit this city which is home to 55,000 permanent residents. Venice has introduced an entry fee of up to €10 (£9) for day visitors to the city, a move welcomed by local hoteliers.The tax measure was included in Italy’s budget law for 2019 and is aimed primarily at the more than one million cruise passengers who visit Venice each year. It has led to calls for similar taxes elsewhere in Italy. Link
