Thailand considers charging tourism tax – Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry is considering the possibility of imposing a tourist levy, which will go towards improving local attractions, infrastructure and insurance coverage for foreign visitors. Aside from improving existing tourist attractions, the tourist levy will be used to protect the environment as well. Popular tourist destinations in Thailand have been especially impacted by overcrowding. The next step is now to consult tourism stakeholder during a six-month study prior to any final decision.

Travel warning eased for Sri Lanka – Tour operators in Germany are starting to offer Sri Lanka holidays again after Berlin scaled back its previous warning against travelling to the South Asian island, according to FVW. The German foreign ministry has updated its travel advice for Sri Lanka and no longer advises against any trips to the island that are not absolutely necessary. Instead, Berlin says that public order has been restored. However, the ministry still advises holidaymakers to take particular care, including avoiding public places, and to monitor the local news and stay in close contact with tour operators and airlines. Most tour operators, including TUI, Thomas Cook and DER Touristik, will apply the usual travel and payment conditions from July 1 onwards for trips to Sri Lanka.

Thomas Cook offers online modular packages– Thomas Cook customers in Germany will soon be able to book modular package holidays online for the winter 2019/20 season in response to rising demand for more individualised offers. From July, customers will be able to select on the Neckermann Reisen website a ‘basic package’ of flight + accommodation, and then, for example, choose their airline, flight time, airport transfers, room category and gastronomy service level out of Thomas Cook Germany’s complete product portfolio. The package price will be constantly updated depending on which filter options are selected. Travel agents will get a tool so they can also book for their clients. This latest product innovation aims to make traditional package holidays more flexible and respond to changing customer wishes as reflected in the company’s Holiday Report 2019.

Dertour stops honeymoon catalogue– According to FVW, tour operator Dertour will no longer produce their wedding catalogue. The main reason for this decision was that “the official requirements for a wedding abroad have become more complex over the years”, Dertour stated, “especially in cases where guests of different nationalities get married”. Therefore, Dertour decided to no longer accept new bookings. However, all wedding bookings made so far will be handled with the full performance promise. The tour operator also continues to focus on the honeymoon target group and offers honeymoon specials in destinations in the Indian Ocean.

New report predicts Boeing 737-Max will remain grounded until August – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicted that the beleaguer Boeing 737-Max 8 aircraft will remain grounded until August. Director General Alexandre de Juniac said «we do not expect something before 10 or 12 weeks», although he added a final decision was up to regulators. The aircraft was grounded by regulators worldwide after 157 people were killed when an Ethiopian Airlines’ 737 Max crashed. Five months previously a Lion Air 737 Max crashed, claiming 189 lives.

Collision between tour boats on Danube in Budapest – The deadly collision between the Hableany tour boat and the Viking Sigyn in Budapest happened on Wednesday as the vessels were going under a bridge during a rainy night in fast-running waters on the Danube. Local authorities are saying that the smaller tour boat carrying 33 Korean tourists appeared to veer into the Viking ship, tipping and sinking within seconds of being hit. Seven people were killed and 21 others were missing, authorities said. Seven others were rescued. None were wearing life jackets. The deadly collision between the Hableany tour boat and the Viking Sigyn in Budapest was the second involving a Viking river ship this season, and at least the third involving a river cruise ship in Europe in less than a year. However, collisions between river cruise ships and the many cargo and other vessels that ply Europe’s waterways have been relatively rare, although the number of cruise ships has risen dramatically in recent years.
