BBC, 17 May 2019: Pound slides to four-month low after Brexit talks end
The pound has sunk to a four-month low against the dollar after cross-party Brexit talks between the Conservatives and Labour collapsed. The pound is 1.85% lower this week, its steepest decline since February last year when it fell by more than 2%. Link
BBC, 17 May 2019: Theresa May agrees to set timetable to choose successor
Theresa May has promised to set a timetable for the election of her successor after the next Brexit vote in the first week of June.The agreement follows a meeting between the prime minister and senior Tory MPs who are demanding a date for her departure from Downing Street. If she loses the vote on her Brexit plan, already rejected three times, sources told the BBC she would resign. Link

Buying Business Travel, 17 May 2019: London labelled ‘most connected business hub’
European meetings and event planners continue to think of London as the most connected business hub on the continent, according to an analysis of booking data. London & Partners, the official convention bureau for the city, says a host of new hotels, venues, restaurants, incentive experiences and transport links are helping to strengthen the UK capital’s MICE offering. All landing cards for international passengers arriving in the UK will be scrapped from Monday. Landing cards are currently filled in by passengers arriving by air or sea from outside the European Economic Area. Link

Teletext Holidays is sponsoring a new Travel Bloggers Award at this year’s British Travel Awards. Bloggers in 10 different travel categories have been encouraged to put themselves forward for a BTA, explaining how the got into blogging, how many followers they have, how they’ve monetised their blog and stating three things that make them stand out from the crowd. The categories cover adventure, budget, couples, family, female, food, LGBT, solo, luxury and travel photography. Link

Travel Mole, 17 May 2019: Jet2 puts more Iceland departures on sale
Jet2.com and Jet2CityBreaks are to offer more trips to Iceland next winter from Birmingham, East Midlands and Newcastle. The airline and operator are now offering a choice of 35 three-night or four-night trips from across six departure points, including Manchester, Leeds Bradford and Glasgow as well as Birmingham, East Midlands and Newcastle. Travel Weekly, 15 May 2019: Jet2 confirms year-round commitment to Cyprus
Jet2.com and Jet2holidays have confirmed Cyprus as a key year-round holiday destination. This summer’s capacity is up 16% year-on-year to almost 550,000 seats to Paphos and Larnaca with 56 peak time flights a week between the UK and the island.Capacity for winter 2019-20 is up by more than 45% with 200,000 seats on sale. In a call to detail Tui Group’s half-year results, chief executive Fritz Joussen said: “I don’t want to exclude things 100%, but our strategy and vision is very clear.” Joussen indicated airlines were not part of Tui’s acquisition strategy. Link

TTG, 14 May 2019: Several European countries ‘moving backwards’ on LGBT rights
The 2019 Rainbow Europe Map and Index, which is produced by ILGA-Europe, found that several countries were “moving backwards as existing laws and policies disappeared” – the first time this has happened in the 10-year history of the index. The Rainbow Map ranks 49 European countries under a variety of categories such as equality and non-discrimination, family laws, hate crime and hate speech, legal gender recognition and asylum. Malta again came top of the rankings for its LGBT-friendly laws and policies with a 90% score for the fourth consecutive year followed by Belgium (73%) and Luxemburg (70%). The UK ranked joint seventh with a score of 66%. Link
TTG, 14 May 2019: On the Beach profits rise despite Brexit disruption
The OTA saw adjusted pre-tax profits of £15.7 million in the six months to 31 March, an increase of £1.9 million year-on-year. Revenue rose 41% to £63.5 million. The UK operation (On the Beach UK and Sunshine.co.uk) increased revenue 1% to £44.6 million and saw adjusted pre-tax earnings rise 10% to £18.4 million. International revenue fell 56% to £0.4 million. Link

TTG, 14 May 2019: Opposition to Balearics green levy ‘largely disappeared’ after raising €200m
Industry opposition to the Balearic Islands’ sustainability tax – which has raised €200 million in less than three years – has largely disappeared, officials believe. The tax was introduced in July 2016 and is levied at between €1 and €4pppn, depending on star rating, as well as on cruise ships (€2). Link
