 BBC, 03 May 2019: Local elections: Main parties hit by Brexit backlash in polls
The Conservatives and Labour have faced a backlash at the ballot box over the Brexit deadlock, with smaller parties and independents winning seats. Results are coming in after local elections in England and Northern Ireland, and national politics seems to have been a deciding factor for voters. The Tories have lost nearly 450 seats and 18 English councils so far, many of them to a resurgent Liberal Democrats. Labour has also had a disappointing night, losing about 80 seats to date. Link

BBC, 01 May 2019: UK government cancels Brexit ferry deals   
The Department for Transport is cancelling contracts to provide extra ferry services after Brexit. The government bought £89m worth of capacity from Brittany Ferries and DFDS. Some of that capacity might be sold, but millions of pounds could be lost. The contracts were designed to ease pressure on the port of Dover, by creating extra services at other ports. Link

BBC, 01 May 2019: May hopes UK will leave ‘well before’ 31 October deadline 
Theresa May has said she hopes the UK will leave the EU well before the new 31 October Brexit deadline. She told MPs there was no reason the UK could not leave in a matter of weeks once MPs backed an agreement, which they have so far rejected three times. She signalled she hoped to get Labour backing for any new customs proposal before putting it to Parliament again.Link

Travel Mole, 02 May 2019: More Brits taking one long holiday, says Interhome
Holiday home specialist Interhome is reporting a shift away from shorter and more frequent city breaks to one-off, longer summer holidays. Based on its latest data, it says the trend relates to Brits holidaying both in the UK and overseas. Comparing summer 2019 bookings with summer 2018, the company says it is seeing a move away from short-stay bookings and city breaks, which tend to be in apartments, to 7 to 14-night stays in villas with private pools. Link 

Travel Weekly, 02 May 2019: Heathrow gears up for expansion following record first quarter
Heathrow’s first quarter pre-tax profits soared by 72% to £57 million as the airport handled a record 17.9 million passengers. New routes to Newquay, Chengdu, Osaka, Phoenix, Pittsburgh and Charleston were introduced in the period. Link

TTG, 01 May 2019: Responsible Travel calls for higher aviation duties  
Sustainable tourism specialist Responsible Travel has called for a global “Green Flying Duty” on flights to control CO2 emissions from aviation, including placing higher charges on premium airline seats. The company has launched a Manifesto for the Future of Tourism with the stark warning that “tourism is out of control”. Link

A Thomas Cook travel agent and her husband who died while on a Thomas Cook holiday in Egypt might have been killed by fumes they inhaled, a UK court has heard. Link

Travel Weekly, 03 May 2019: BA slashes prices in May sale
British Airways is claiming “huge discounts” on flights and holidays in a May sale. More than 120 destinations from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City airport are on offer in the sale. Link

TTG, 01 May 2019: EasyJet extends twice-weekly Bristol-Lyon service into summer season   
EasyJet will extend its twice-weekly Bristol-Lyon winter service into the summer. New flights will begin on 1 July, operating on Mondays and Fridays using Airbus A320 aircraft. Link

Campaigners are urging airlines to offer vegan in-flight meals as standard. The Vegan Society and Humane Society International have created a website to provide consumers with an online rating system for vegan in-flight meals. Link

Travel Weekly, 02 May 2019: Easter boost for low-cost carriers
The Easter period provided a boost to both Ryanair and Wizz Air with April passenger numbers soaring.Ryanair group carryings rose by 10% to 13.5 million passengers to give a rolling annual total up 9% to 142.3 million. Hungarian low cost carrier Wizz Air flew 3.2 million passengers last month against 2.7 million at the same time last year, a rise of 19%. Link

TTG, 02 May 2019: Thomas Cook ‘sets deadline for expressions of interest in airline’ 
Thomas Cook has reportedly set a 7 May deadline for expressions of interest in its airline business, Reuters reports. Cook placed its airline business up for sale in February after its first quarter loss grew £14 million to £60 million. Link

TTG, 02 May 2019: Jet2 launches Izmir programme  
Jet2’s first flights to Turkish «sunshine hotspot» Izmir got under way this week. The carrier’s first Manchester flight took off on Wednesday (1 May). Flights from Stansted and Glasgow start on Thursday (2 May), Newcastle on Friday (3 May) and Birmingham and Leeds Bradford next Wednesday (8 May). Link

Travel Bulletin, 02 May 2019: Lithuania capital Vilnius gets direct flight from London
A new flight is launching from London City Airport (LCY) direct to Lithuania’s capital city Vilnius on May 1. LOT Polish Airlines will offer up to 12 flights a week on this service and is the first to offer business class on a direct flight to the destination. Link

The travel industry needs an injection of younger agents to attract millennials and to understand how they want to book and research their trips. That’s the view of InteleTravel president James Ferrara, who said over 25% of its agents are millennials and the number is rising fast. Link

Tui has welcomed its first guests to the newly-refurbished Magic Life Bodrum, the operator’s fifth all-inclusive Magic Life resort in Turkey. The addition of Bodrum, said Tui, demonstrated its commitment to meeting “fast-growing demand” for the eastern Mediterranean, highlighted this week by Thomas Cook’s 2019 Holiday Report, which revealed Turkey was now Cook’s second most popular destination for summer 2019. Link

Tui has added a further 2,000 hotels to its summer 2020 programme and has significantly
extended its flight capacity for Turkey by some 45,000 seats for next summer. Link
