TTG, 24 May 2019: Abta urges travel firms to continue planning for no-deal Brexit
Luke Petherbridge, head of public affairs at Abta, said the industry needed to make sure planning for a hard Brexit “remains to the fore” in the current political environment. “No-deal is not dormant, it’s having a nap – it will come back in October,” warned Petherbridge, during a session on Brexit at Abta’s annual Travel Law Seminar in London. Link

Her Brexit plans failed again and again to impress squabbling MPs in parliament, but she soldiered on regardless. Until now. In an emotional statement outside her office in Downing St, Mrs May finally announced she was stepping down as prime minister. She will quit as Conservative party leader on 7 June but will stay in office until a successor is found. Mrs May – who became the UK’s second female prime minister in July 2016 – had been under sustained pressure from lawmakers opposed to her Brexit plans. Link

TTG, 21 May 2019: Consumers value high street agents for expertise and personal experience
However, agents must now tackle the perception they are expensive if they are to cement their place on the high street anew. Nearly a quarter (23%) of Brits surveyed by media agency eight&four said they find it “quicker and easier” to use a high street travel agent to book their holidays. A further 23% said they feel travel agents offer a more personal experience while 21% said they appreciate their expertise and in-depth advice. Link

Breaking Travel News, 24 May 2019: Thomas Cook considering offer for Nordic businesses
Shares in Thomas Cook were up a modest two per cent this morning after the struggling travel giant confirmed it had received a “highly preliminary and unsolicited indicative offer” from Triton Partners for its northern Europe business. Private equity firm Triton Partners is believed to have submitted a bit for the company’s tour operator and airline in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.Link

Flights to Tunisia have returned to Leeds Bradford airport with summer departures to Enfidha. The weekly flights, operated by Nouvelair on behalf of Thomas Cook, will operate until September 24. Link

Travel Weekly, 24 May 2019: Millennials drive demand for staycations
According to new research by Barclays, the British staycation boom will continue in 2019, as holidaymakers rate UK and overseas holidays equally. Three in 10 domestic holidaymakers (31%) plan to spend more holiday time in the UK in 2019 than in previous years – and more than half of those surveyed (52%) who were aged 25 to 34 plan to increase their UK-based holiday time.
