Travel Weekly, 25 January 2019: Ryanair puts winter flights on sale early
Ryanair has put more than 150 winter 2019 flights on sale early. Flights from the UK to Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain are bookable up to March 2020. More than 40 routes including Madrid, Milan and Morocco, are available from Stansted. Flights to Alicante, Barcelona and Tenerife are bookable from Manchester.

Travel Mole, 25 January 2019: Ryanair adds new Cardiff route
Ryanair will launch a new Cardiff-Malaga route this summer. The three times weekly service starts in June as part of Ryanair’s Cardiff summer 2019 schedule. There will be five routes from Cardiff in total, including new routes to Barcelona, Malta and now Malaga, as well as Faro and Tenerife. Deb Barber, CEO of Cardiff Airport, said this means that in just one year, Ryanair has grown its capacity at Cardiff Airport by over 150%.

TTG, 22 January 2019: EasyJet counts £15 million loss of drone disruption
EasyJet lost around £15 million as a result of the drone disruption to flights at Gatwick before Christmas. The repeated sightings of drones at the Sussex airport caused flights to be cancelled for nearly two days in December costing easyJet around £5 million from cancelled flights and lost revenue, plus another £10 million in “customer welfare” costs. The airline was forced to cancel more than 400 flights due to the drone disruption, which affected 82,000 of easyJet’s customers. Link

Travel Weekly, 25 January 2019: Global tourism growth set to return to historic levels in 2019

International tourist arrivals grew by 6% to 1.4 billion last year, ahead of previous forecasts. The UN World Tourism Organisation had predicted in 2010 that the milestone would not be reached until 2020. Stronger economic growth, more affordable air travel, technological changes, new business models and greater visa facilitation around the word have accelerated growth in recent years. The UNWTO forecasts international arrivals to return to growth of 3%-4% this year, more in line with historic trends. Link

Travel Bulletin, 25 January 2019: ABTA estimates that 4.7mn Brits are heading abroad for Christmas & New Year getaway
ABTA estimates that more than 4.7 million passengers are heading abroad over the Christmas and New Year period (December 18 –January 2), with the peak travel day predicted to be December 21, and Christmas Day expected to be the quietest day for travel. Holidaymakers are either heading off for some much-needed winter sun or to colder climes to enjoy the snow. Winter sun lovers are expected to head short haul to the Canary Islands, Alicante and Egypt, while Dubai and India are long haul favourites. Link

TTG, 25 January 2019: Travel firms to increase tech budgets
The December 2018 poll of 143 industry professionals found that last year, 18% of travel firms budgeted between £100,000 and £500,000 for technology; excluding maintenance and business critical hardware; but for 2019 this increased to 34% of companies willing to spend this amount. Link

 

TTG, 24 January 2019: Heathrow expansion should be stopped, says report
A new report on aircraft noise in London has called for all growth in air traffic at Heathrow and London City to be stopped. London Assembly’s environment committee has published an Aircraft Noise report saying that “noise nuisance levels are unacceptable” in the UK capital. Link

Travel Weekly, 25 January 2019: European airports chief warns on Brexit
European airports association ACI Europe has warned the EU’s intended response to a no-deal Brexit threatens small and medium-sized airports across the EU. ACI Europe president Michael Kerkloh, chief executive of Munich airport, said: “We are worried about the contingency measures proposed [by the EU]. Link

Agents have reported an increase in the number of customers making late bookings for departures before the planned Brexit date of March 29, amid a January which is proving strong for many in the trade. Steve Cartwright, managing director of Cartwright Travel in Cardiff, said: “We’re seeing some people getting in with late bookings for travel before the end of March, as they want to get away before Brexit. Link


TTG, 25 January 2019: Calls for EU to relax no-deal aviation rules

According to the BBC, a group of countries want to give UK airlines and hauliers permission to operate in the EU, an agreement known as cabotage. The European Commission has made preparations for a no-deal scenario, but some EU countries have urged lawmakers in Brussels to ensure the measures are not overly stringent. It is understood flights between the UK and the EU would be capped at 2018 levels in the event of a no-deal Brexit. Link

Travel Mole, 24 January 2019: Brits happy to fly at inconvenient times to save money
British travellers are happy to fly at inhospitable hours to cut the cost of their holiday, according to the latest travel trends report from Travelzoo. Its survey of 1,600 UK travellers found half would actively try to save money by sacrificing convenient travel times.More than half (54%) said they would try to save money on whether they receive in-flight meals, while (70%) said they would try to save money on baggage costs. The survey also showed that 55% plan to take an all-inclusive trip this year, slightly down on 59% who booked an all-inclusive trip in the last few years. The number of those who plan to book flight and accommodation separately across all types of trip dropped from 72% last year to 60% this year, supporting research by ABTA that package holidays are on the rise. Link

 

Travel Weekly, 25 January 2019: Tui sees Sunshine Saturday, Sunday and Monday across Europe
Figures from Tui reveal the Germans are like the Brits, with a peak in bookings on ‘Sunshine Saturday’ – while Scandinavians and French prefer ‘Sunshine Sunday’. The top destinations for Europeans are Spain and Greece, while Turkey and Egypt are seeing significant growth. Link

TTG, 24 January 2019: Tui tests augmented reality glasses in Palma
The operator has begun trialling the technology, which provides clients with historical facts and destination information. Excursions and activities division Tui Destination Experiences is testing the glasses in Palma de Mallorca for several weeks this winter. The glasses place information, photographs, videos and 3D models in front of what holidaymakers are looking at, allowing them to explore independently. Link
